In a year where so much had happened locally, the town got another surprise when a sinkhole started to take shape in George Street.
This sinkhole started outside the entrance of the Supermarket’s driveway; the town’s radio stations were able to quickly report on it on Facebook as they were just down the street.
Thankfully the road surface did not collapse and take any passing through cars with it.
Repairs were carried out on the road on November 29, and it was revealed that it was a sewer collapse that caused the sinkhole and that meant the following had to happen.
Northern entrance to the IGA carpark was closed from 5pm 29 November and the southern entrance to the IGA carpark was closed as of 1pm 29 November.
The ERC (Edward River Council) had created a temporary entrance at the northern end of the carpark off George St.
The large excavation was to earmarked to commence on Monday December 5 with the rear doors and back carpark remaining open on Charlotte St, access to the bottle shop was via the laneway behind bakery and Bakery access was normal however parking was potentially limited due to the lack of available parking.
Pumps were in place in December 2022 to try and lower the water table height around the area.
It was reported in January 2023 that despite the running of pumps, the water table height prevented works from being carried out at the site.
The sewer pipe in George St was repaired in February 2023 with the street fully reopening that month.
