The original ‘Old Jack’ sign was recovered from the ground in 2015? The original sign was rusted but it was readable, it said, ‘Here near the Highlander Inn, ‘Old Jack’ was tied to a tree & burnt to death by Capt Mevilles gang 1852‘.
The current sign reads ‘On this Spot “Old Jack” is buried burnt to death by Bushrangers 1852‘
An 1895 recounting of Deniliquin’s early days by The Bohemian incorrectly stated that Captain Melville was executed.
The Three Muses in Waring Gardens were originally on the now demolished School of Arts building in End Street, they were designed by Fred Harrison with the tender being put out in 1892 with Mr. S. A. MacFarland being chosen from twenty-three tenders.
The work was carried out in Italy, and the Three Muses were hoisted into position by Mr. Tucker, they were placed on the building in September 1893 with J. G. Evans performing the unveiling ceremony with J. W. H. Wyse also giving a speech.

Memorial Park used to be known as Jubilee Park and a suggestion that Jubilee Park be ‘developed as an additional park and sports ground and that the existing showground in the southwest should be superseded by Jubilee Park‘ came true later on.

Deniliquin had a Skating Rink, it was with the Lyceum Theatre, it is now the site of the Deniliquin Baptist Church and at least one photo exists of the rink, the photo may be from 1922.
Deniliquin Baptist Church has in their foyer a small collection of memorabilia from the Regent Theatre.
Deniliquin had a couple of beer and cordial manufacturers in 19th and 20th centuries, none of them (Ernstsen, Riverine and Collins and Son) exist today.
Movies were shown again in the Town Hall in 2024, they had stopped regularly showing them in the 1950’s as the Regent Theatre moved to Edwardes Street.
The Lyceum Theatre was dismantled in the 1950’s, and the materials were used by Ennor Engineering as a smaller building, the floor ended up at Gillespie’s.
Schools in NSW had a series of strikes in 1999, during one full day strike, High Schoolers would go on the school buses to Deni High and then walk into town before catching the bus home in the afternoon.
Two students were at the school during the full day strike in 1999, one was made to go to school, the other was badgered into going to school by the other student.
The Victoria Skating Rink that existed in George Street in the late 1800’s was measured at 100 feet (30m) by 40 feet (12m) with 12 feet (3.65m) wall plates.
The Victoria Skating Rink was opposite the George Street School, it was later the Salvation Army Barracks and there was a four-room residence and outhouses attached, the building was owned by Mrs Patterson in 1933 when it was put up for auction and it survived a fire in the back that same year.
St Kilda’s seconds came to Deniliquin in 1933 to play against the Deniliquin Football Club, St Kilda’s reserves defeated Deniliquin in that match, they had finished runners up in the 1933 VFL seconds season having lost to Melbourne by a point.
A massive dust storm hit Deniliquin in 1944, and photos were taken of the event at the airport.
